"Jesus And Me" - known as J.A.M. - is our Sunday school option for children grades K - 6th. Bible stories come to life downstairs in the administrative building every Sunday! With age-appropriate activities, crafts, and games for each class, our children have a blast learning scripture with other kids their ages!
Starting in Spring, we are introducing a new and more interactive Children's Sunday school curriculum that is not only engaging, but also easier to teach! We encourage both you and your child to participate and "Live BIG!"

Outreach and mission can begin at a young age and we want the children of St. Luke's to make mission a regular part of their lives... Here is an idea of what mission projects the children have participated in in the past:
VBS is filled with missions! While the 3 year olds - 4th graders collected nickels to help pay for the gleaning of potatoes for hungry US families through the Society of St. Andrews, the 5th and 6th graders set out each evening on various service activities such as yard work for church members, serving at the Salvation Army, playing Bingo at assisted living homes, and gardening at the Family Care Center. For them, VBS was more about service and less about crafts and songs! We are still extremely proud of our younger kids who raised over $190 for the Society of St. Andrews which is about 3,800 pounds of potatoes!
One mission project for St. Luke's children was the "Rice Bowls" ministry. On February 21st each child received their own Rice Bowl to fill with spare change. 100% of the money raised is sent to orphanages around the world. St. Luke's kids collected over $200.00 for needy children through this mission project!
The next big Children's mission opportunity will be on June 5th during a church-wide service event known as "Operation Reach Out." We are encouraging families to participate in the various activities, especially "Dolls for Haiti," a project that makes unique dolls by hand to send to the children of Haiti who are in the countries orphanages. Kids of all ages can participate through either stuffing dolls, helping cut clothe, and even sewing! We hope to see families take part in this great event!

The nursery, for ages infant - 4 years, is available in the Child Development building for all three services as well as during the Sunday school hour. Our nursery workers have years of experience and a passion for working with the youngest children! We even offer age-appropriate "mini-lessons" for our younger kids so that they can start experiencing God's Word through activities at the earliest ages!

2006 W.I.S.E. Award Recipient
Wonderfully In Search of Excellence
Western North Carolina Conference
of the United Methodist Church
St. Luke's Child Development Center is an outreach mission of St. Luke's UMC. We began over 30 years ago as a co-op Mother's Morning Out Program, serving a hand-full of children. By 2006 we had grown to serving over 100 children. We have expanded our programs to include preschool for children from ages 5 months through Four Year Old Pre-K classes and a Transitional Kindergarten for older four year olds and five year olds.
The C.D.C. Exists To:
- To be an outreach program of St. Luke's United Methodist Church that ministers to the needs of children in a Christian environment.
- To provide and atmosphere which will help each child grow tohis or her fullest potential: physically, emotionally, socially, mentally, and spiritually.
- To offer families in our community a program that is designed to help children learn to share and play.
- To assure that children leave our program ready to learn, with enthusiasm and social and educational skills for successful learning in elementary school and behond.
Our Curriculum Philosophy
At SLCDC, we believe in the importance of ministering to the "whole child." We provide the children with a Christ-centered, developmentally appropriate learning environment where all activities are child-oriented, with subtle eacher direction that demonstrates and reinforces Christian character. Our curriculum for our youngest children includes daily music, stories, art, free play and outside play (weather permitting). We offer weekly Spanish lessons, Art Adventures outreach classes the Hickory Museum of Art and chapel to our classes starting with our Three Year Old Class.
